Bread and Salt

On Monday 2nd October, Compton McRae opened its kitchen and space to the Ukrainian community who prepared for us all, a welcome reception for the visit of Kyiv City Ballet.

Ukrainian guests, their hosts, and the partners that do so much to support our work, gathered in the falling dusk to welcome the stars of Ukrainian ballet.

The Chair of Shaftesbury Refugee Group, Carolyn, asks the distinguished leaders of our community to make a welcome on our behalf to our Ukrainian Guests .

John Young, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Dorset gave a welcome and spoke movingly about his own experience as a host.

Cllr. Val Pothecary, Chairman of Dorset Council told us of the laughter and richness that hosting had brought her and made a plea for more hosts to support the people of Ukraine.

Bishop Karen spoke on behalf of the community of churches to welcome our guests and her words were shared with everyone in Ukrainian by Kateryna.

Ivan responded on behalf of Kyiv City Ballet whose members, Katya, Micha, Kristina, Jack and Olesia were welcomed to a week that has a focus on togetherness and the joy of dance.

Iryna offers our guest Ivan Kozlov, Bread and Salt, watched by Bishop Karen, Carolyn and members of the Ukrainian community.

This meaningful act demonstrates the lasting friendship and bond that has been forged between North Dorset and the people of Ukraine.

The evening was staffed by young Ukrainians and friends of Bill Dowling. Proud to serve and proud to be Ukrainian.

The support of the Mayor of Shaftesbury for the week has been invaluable and we look forward to her role in thanking our guests and their hosts on Sunday morning and holding the performance together on Sunday evening.

Keri from Alfred captured the occasion and we are grateful for him bringing joy to Ivan too.
