Quiz Night, March 2025
We hold our quiz nights to have fun, raise funds and build community. This was another special evening where we achieved all we set out to do.
This video was taken at 6.50pm and it gives a sense of what the evening was like and the fabulous buffet provided by Kabab Ji (Syrian Cuisine) based in Gillingham
The hall was full to bursting with 83 quizzers and in the end the results were very, very, very close.
The winning team was ‘The Innumerate Seven’, a team of 6 who scored 79.5 from a possible 99 points , just half a point more than ‘Motcombe and Wise’ who had been 3 points ahead after 6 rounds but fell behind after the 10th.
The winning team’s reward: a hamper full of Shaftesbury Deli goodies.
Special mentions to the teams; Universally Challenged, Green Shorts, Rascals, The March Hares, Misfits, and Colin’s Crew who all scored 70 or more.
There were over 30 quiz prizes for the raffle, with some beautiful and rather expensive scarves and pashminas, bottles of wine, children’s games, an antique Spode dish from Shaftesbury Antiques, books from our friends at Folde and The Kitchen Table, a selection of scented candles and of course, a cuddly toy! The top prize was a £25 voucher from the wonderful owners of The Grosvenor Arms
The quiz was said to be a lot of fun, it also made people’s heads hurt (in a nice way) and showed how hard it is to knock ducks down.
What was undoubtedly a highlight was the very professional and generous buffet made possible through the hard work of Bayan Alalem and Imad Aljam, co-owners of Kabab Ji (Syrian Cuisine). The food made was authentically Syrian, tasty and excitingly new. There was a great selection in the buffet for vegetarians and the mouthwatering pistachio baklava that finished off the meal were delightfully presented by Louai and tasted exquisite.

The evening ran smoothly thanks to the many helping hands from our volunteers but also from the quiz goers who made tidying up after the evening effortless by contributing to the work of tidying the hall.
Special thanks amongst the many helping hands should go to the room setters, Simon and Miles, to the raffle ticket sellers Rebecca and Guy and to our quiz markers, Joyce, Carolyn and Nicky.
Every one of our quizzes has some special moment, this time it was the generosity of someone who won the lottery for £5 for a fiver and with real grace and style donated their £127.50 winnings to Shaftesbury Refugee Group, boosting the overall total raised to £710.01.
Motcombe Memorial Hall is a very special resource in the village and its volunteer staff make hiring the hall and accessing the service easy. Special thanks to Gail who managed the bar, Graham on the AV, Jason on maintenance and Sam who helped us book. Much appreciated.
